Migration changes operations, not just the platform
Proxmox VE offers tools that make moving a virtual machine much easier. The first successful moves can therefore create the impression that the migration is a done deal. In reality, far more changes than the hypervisor: how storage and networking are handled, backup, monitoring, high availability and the established routines of your operations team.
Where the risks are
- Application dependencies that are not documented anywhere.
- Systems with specific hardware, licensing or security requirements.
- Backup and monitoring that no longer work to their original extent after the move.
- A lack of capacity or performance while both platforms run side by side.
- A plan with no way back if a step fails.
Why a generic procedure is not enough
Guides and tools are a good starting point, but they do not know your environment. The same procedure can be uneventful for one system and mean a long outage for another. What matters is the order and timing of the steps, and the criteria by which each step is considered successful. For critical systems, a migration with no downtime at all cannot be assumed.
What an experienced architect brings
An independent view on whether and when to migrate. A realistic estimate of scope, risk and downtime before you decide. A target architecture that takes storage, networking and backup into account, and a phased plan with a prepared rollback. The result is a migration in which surprises are the exception rather than the rule.
How we can help
Stanke Group helps assess your environment, design the target platform on Proxmox VE or KVM and either carries out the migration or provides expert oversight. Find out more about our VMware to Proxmox & KVM Migration service.
