Architecture matters more than installation
Distributed storage provides resilience against the loss of disks and even entire servers. That benefit only materializes when the design reflects real load and failure scenarios. Design mistakes often do not show up straight away, but only as the environment grows, during maintenance or at the first serious failure, which is exactly when they are most expensive to fix.
Performance, availability and capacity are linked
Data resilience, capacity and performance are closely connected. The chosen data protection architecture affects storage requirements, networking and system behavior during failures. The right design therefore depends on the requirements of each environment.
There is no single right design
Databases, virtual desktops, file services and archives have entirely different requirements. A recommendation that suits one environment can harm another. Generic recommendations without context are not enough, and every design should be validated under realistic load and simulated failure before it goes into production.
High availability is not backup
A properly designed cluster can maintain data availability during certain hardware failures. However, this does not automatically guarantee uninterrupted application operation. High availability must therefore be complemented by appropriate backup and recovery planning.
How we can help
We design new Proxmox VE clusters with Ceph, assess and modernize existing environments, and resolve performance and stability problems. Find out more about our Proxmox, Ceph & Private Cloud service.
